Every instrument we carry is sourced directly from master craftspeople working within living lineages. We stock no factory instruments. Each piece is individually inspected before dispatch.

The defining instrument of Hindustani classical music. Made from aged teak, seasoned toomba gourd, and bone frets, with 17 to 20 sympathetic strings running beneath the main playing strings. Our sitars are made in Kolkata's Rabindra Sarani luthier district.

The heartbeat of Hindustani music. A matched pair — the dayan (right, rosewood or teak) and the bayan (left, copper or brass). The syahi — the black tuning paste applied by the maker — determines the instrument's voice and is applied by hand over weeks.

The sacred drone that underpins every raga performance. Four strings tuned to the tonic and fifth create an ocean of overtones that the soloist swims in throughout the performance. Played continuously — never melodically — as a living tonal foundation.

The bamboo flute immortalised in Krishna iconography and the music of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. A transverse flute with six or eight finger holes, tuned by the maker's ear. Our bansuri are made from seasoned bamboo harvested from the Narmada valley.

The sarod has no frets — the player stops the strings with the nail of the left hand on a polished steel fingerboard. This produces a continuous glide between notes that is impossible on any fretted instrument, and defines the sarod's uniquely liquid, introspective voice.

The instrument of Saraswati, goddess of knowledge. The Saraswati veena is carved from a single piece of jackwood and carries 24 movable frets over a 3.5-octave range. The foundational instrument of Carnatic music, played laying horizontally across the lap.

Our Story
Vanidhiri — meaning "treasure of sound" in Sanskrit — was founded to solve a simple problem: serious musicians in the UK had no reliable way to access the quality of instruments that their teachers learned on in India.
We travel to instrument-making centres across India — Kolkata's Rabindra Sarani, Varanasi's tabla workshops, Miraj's tanpura makers, and Thanjavur's veena craftspeople — and build long-term relationships with master makers. Every instrument is inspected in person before it leaves India.
We are based in Brentwood, Essex, and offer personal consultation for students and professionals choosing their first or next instrument.

Every instrument we stock is made by an individual craftsperson or small workshop. We do not carry machine-made or assembly-line instruments regardless of price point.
Before any instrument leaves India, a member of our team inspects it for tuning stability, structural integrity, finish quality, and playability. We reject more than we accept.
Choosing a classical Indian instrument is not a simple transaction. We offer free consultation calls with every enquiry — matched to the student's tradition, teacher, and level.
Instruments are packed in custom foam-lined flight cases or individual hardshell cases. We have never lost an instrument to transit damage. Every shipment is insured.

All instruments are subject to availability. Prices are in GBP and include UK VAT at the applicable rate. A binding contract is formed when we confirm your order by email. Due to the handcrafted nature of each instrument, minor visual variations from photographs are expected and do not constitute grounds for return.
All instruments are new unless explicitly described as pre-owned. Each instrument is individually inspected before dispatch. Photos provided on request for specific instruments prior to purchase.

These terms are governed by English law. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

We accept returns within 14 days of delivery on all instruments in accordance with the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Given the value and fragility of instruments, we ask that you contact us before returning any item.
Email hello@vanidhiri.shop with your order reference and reason. We will arrange specialist packaging materials and a collection. Do not ship an instrument back without our guidance — incorrect packaging can cause damage in transit.
Refunds are processed within 14 days of receiving the returned instrument in satisfactory condition, to your original payment method.
Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photographs. We will arrange repair, replacement, or full refund at no cost.

We ship to all UK addresses and selected international destinations. All instruments are dispatched from our Brentwood location.
Instruments in stock are dispatched within 3 working days. Special order or custom instruments require 4 to 8 weeks lead time from our Indian makers. You will receive a dispatch confirmation with full tracking information.
All instruments are shipped in custom foam-lined flight cases or original hardshell cases. Every shipment is fully insured for the declared instrument value. If transit damage occurs, contact us within 48 hours with photographs.
